What to Bring

Below is a list of suggested items to bring to Sewanee. They are not all necessary, but most of them are useful at different times. We recommend twin XL bedding as there are a mix of both regular twin and twin XL beds present in all residence halls.

Things Not to Bring

  • Metal frame futon furniture
  • Extension cords
  • Candles and incense
  • Nails, glue-backed picture hangers, decals, or 3M command hooks/ strips.
  • Other fire safety hazards (including, but not limited to hot plates, toasters, and toaster ovens)
  • Pets (including fish)
  • Large and/or loud speakers
  • Firearms or other weapons
  • Hoverboards (including but not limited to self-balancing scooters, battery operated scooters, and hands-free Segways)
  • "Flushable"/ disposable wipes (these cannot be flushed in our residences)

Things to Bring

Apparel
  • Semi-formal clothing for class dress (men typically wear khakis, a collared shirt or coat and tie; women typically wear dress slacks, skirt, and a nice top or a dress)
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Rain gear and a warm coat
  • Clothes hangers
  • Iron

Bathroom and Bedding Items
  • Bathrobe and bath towels
  • Shower rug for suite-style bathrooms
  • Shower shoes
  • Toiletry carrier (if you live in a residence hall with a common bathroom)
  • Shampoo/conditioner
  • Soap
  • Toothpaste & toothbrush
  • Kleenex
  • Comforter or blanket, bed linens and pillows

Desk and School Supplies
  • Small bulletin board for desk
  • Computer
  • Portable flash drive
  • Dictionary & thesaurus
  • Study pillow and/or lap board
  • Scissors, tape, glue, pens, pencils, notebooks, calculator
  • Backpack or messenger bag

Outdoor and Transportation
  • Bicycle, lock, and light
  • Sleeping bag
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Hiking shoes
  • Bug spray
Residence Hall Life and Storage
  • Can opener
  • Plates, bowls, cups, and dining utensils
  • Coffee pot
  • Airtight containers/storage boxes (shallow boxes that fit under the bed are very helpful)
  • UL approved power strips/surge protectors
  • Laundry bag/basket
  • High efficiency "HE" laundry detergent and dryer sheets.
  • First aid supplies
  • Bedside lamp/study lamp (Please note that halogen lamps over 150 watts are not permitted)
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs (if you bring a lamp)
  • Non-toxic, reusable white putty for attaching posters
  • Pictures and posters
  • Fan for students living in non-air conditioned dorms
  • Extra batteries
  • Paper towels and basic cleaning supplies
  • Small vacuum for spills and general cleaning
  • Tension rod – great for hanging curtains on windows or closets without doors
  • TV/DVD player (Note: Cable is not provided in individual student rooms)
