HomePic2The Friends of South Cumberland (FSC) has announced the 2014 recipients of annual awards given during Trails & Trilliums weekend

The Trails & Trilliums Tribute Award will be given to the University of the South in recognition of Sewanee’s emergence as a national leader in sustainability, environmental education, and stewardship of its 13,000 acres. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday evening, April 12.

The University of the South has an institutional commitment to sustainability that began decades ago and has recently accelerated so that the college is recognized as a leading "green school." In its announcement, FSC said, “From housing to farming, from what is served in the dining hall to what majors are offered—Sewanee is making the most of its beautiful Domain on its way to becoming one of the top environmental schools in the country.”

"The university is delighted, and honored, to receive this award. There are so many people who deserve a share of the credit, which makes the recognition widely appreciated,” said Vice-Chancellor John McCardell. “The university tries to lead by example and shares with the Friends of South Cumberland and our many friends beyond the Domain our gratitude for all they are doing, with us, in the important cause of sustainability."

The Friends of South Cumberland is a group of citizen volunteers dedicated to supporting the South Cumberland State Park, Tennessee's largest state wilderness park. The 11th annual Trails & Trilliums, sponsored by FSC, will be held April 11-13, 2014. It is a three-day festival of guided hikes on trails in South Cumberland State Park, workshops, ART for the PARK, a native plant sale, and children's events.
