bottle_aloneAs students begin to arrive back on campus this year the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability begin stocking up on water bottles, mugs, stickers (advertising “Yea Sewanee’s Green”) and reusable tote bags to distribute to students willing to take a “Green Pledge”.

DSCN4133Students were asked to commit to at least one sustainability pledge and, in turn, they would be rewarded with a collection of free environmentally themed Sewanee garb. Potential pledges ranged from “I will offer rides when going to the store to cut down on extra cars/trips/fuel” to “I will not buy bottled water for consumption on campus. I will carry a water bottle”. Some students even took the initiative to come up with their own, unique pledge. One person even went so far as to say that they will “be a vegetarian for one year”.

After students decided which pledge(s) resonated with them the most they were asked to pose for a picture with the pledge(s) they had chosen. The pictures can be seen hung up outside of the Sustainability Office to honor all of the Sewanee students that were willing to commit to a long term greening of their lifestyle. There are almost 300 pictures and pledges on the wall! to date! The large amount of pictures is indicative of the success this first event has seen as well as the growing e-mail list that updates students on sustainability initiatives around campus. After this event, the Office of Sustainability is excited to work alongside students in order to make the Sewanee campus more eco-friendly.
