selcOn Tuesday, April 9th, Anne Davis and Keith Johnston, two members of the Southern Environmental Law Center, visited Sewanee to talk about hot issues in their line of work during two internal meetings, a presentation to a Conservation Biology class, and a lunch open to students. Issues from land conservation to the controversial issue of hydraulic fracturing “fracking” were discussed.

Environmental Policy students, who had recently been tested on fracking issues for their comprehensive exam, offered an understanding of the major policy issues facing federal and state legislation. In addition, Post-Baccalaureate fellow Daniel Church, offered his insights from his senior-field study in 2010 on the viability on fracking on the Domain. While students had much to gain from conversation Managing Attorney, Anne Davis, from SELC’s Nashville office, was fiercely scribbling down names on a notepad as host Biology Professor, Dr. Jon Evan’s rattled off contacts that would be useful for their current cases.

The major cases that the Tennessee branch is working on include Transportation Reform in the south, looking at the stream buffer zone rule, land conservation, retiring outdated coal-burning plants, fracking in the southeast, mountain top removal coal mining, preventing Corridor K (a road construction proposal in East Tennessee), and more. Attorney Davis opined that the Tennessee office is the newest of the Southern Environmental Law Center’s offices and are thus looking for more cases and seeking partnerships and advocacy groups with whom to align. To aid in this help and establish a working dialogue with Sewanee, junior Environmental Policy and Economics double-major, Jordan Long, will be interning with SELC’s Nashville offices this summer 2013.
