Blue Monarch Garden Development
This position will work with the staff and women at Blue Monarch to build garden plots, rehabilitate the existing greenhouse, establish lavender field, and create education program around the garden.
Sisters of St. Mary's Convent Organic Prayer Project Aid
Working with the Sisters of St. Mary's, a small Episcopal convent in Sewanee, TN, students work in the garden tending and planting plants and harvesting food for the sisters, lavender for Thistle Farms in Nashville, cultivating of the prayer garden and labyrinth, and general support for the sisters. This sometimes includes making bread for communion, arranging flowers, or polishing silver.
Swiss Memorial Elementary School Garden Club
10-12 week program in the fall and spring working with 5th - 8th graders in an educational garden program. Bonners/Canales plan lessons and curriculum, introduce and eat healthy snacks, teach classroom components involving basic science, gardening, or nutrition, and spend time working with the children in the garden to reinforce lessons taught in the classroom.
The University Farm integrates the raising of livestock and crops using organic techniques. Tasks include animal care and planting, weeding and harvesting and egg washing and packaging. There are also opportunities to edit short film documentaries and to promote farm related events and speakers. No experience necessary.
