Travelling to Sewanee
The University of the South is located in Sewanee, on top of the Cumberland Plateau (what the locals call “the Mountain”). The University’s property (the “domain”) covers more than 13,000 acres, most of which is forest.
The main meeting point for the Colloquium is Convocation Hall which is on the corner of Georgia Avenue and University Avenue.
The Colloquium hotel is Jim Oliver's Smokehouse, which has offered Colloquium attendees a rate of $80.99; please mention the Colloquium when booking for the special rate. King and double queen rooms are available, both at this price. If you are looking for less expensive offerings, please let us know; we are working with some local renters and St. Mary's Convent for bargain options. Also, we have a shared Google document for sharing rides, rooms, and other expenses; please e-mail email@example.com to be given access.
The two closest airports to Sewanee are the Chattanooga Airport, abbreviated CHA, about 60 miles away, and the Nashville International Airport, abbreviated BNA, about 90 miles away. Sewanee is located about 5 miles from I-24, which runs between Nashville and Chattanooga.
- From Nashville:
Take I-24 East approximately 80 miles to Exit 134 (Sewanee/Monteagle). At the end of the exit ramp turn left on Highway 41A. Now you are in Monteagle, see directions below.
- From Chattanooga or Birmingham (South):
Take I-24 West to Exit 134 (Sewanee/Monteagle). At the end of the exit ramp turn left on Highway 41A. Now you are in Monteagle, see directions below.
- Monteagle to Sewanee:
Once on 41A it will be approximately 4 miles to the stone gates that mark the entrance into the Domain (NOT the Sewanee St. Andrews gates, it is past them on 41A). Veer right according to the sign that indicates The University of the South. This is University Ave. Continue past the hospital on the left, and turn left onto Georgia Avenue at the blinking stoplight. The Alumni House is first building facing on Georgia Avenue, on the right.
- Shuttle Service:
Groome Transportation runs a shuttle service from both Chattanooga and Nashville to and from the Best Western Smoke House Lodge, in Monteagle. Link: http://www.groometransportation.com/
There are several excellent restaurants in and around Sewanee, as well as places for coffee and light meals. The Colloquium meals are generally less expensive than dining out.
