The 11th annual Beyond the Gates event was held on January 9-10, 2015. Forty-seven alumni and parents returned to Sewanee to teach, coach and mentor 88 students--all juniors and seniors. The weekend was packed with helpful information and ample opportunities for conversation. On Friday morning, students learned about their strengths and how to craft an introduction. Emily Post-certified Sewanee parent Virginia Johnson taught networking etiquette and business dining etiquette. After lunch, alumni and parents joined the students for networking and resume review. Afternoon panels included job search skills and interview skills as well as a distinct session for students headed to graduate school.
Friday evening's dinner was held at the new Sewanee Inn where guests heard from Meredith Walker, C'91 and Executive Director of Amy Poehler's Smart Girls. Meredith's inspiring talk encouraged us to be authentic, to change the world by being ourselves, and to "get our hair wet", meaning experience life to the fullest. Meredith was beautifully introduced by Catherine Schwartz, C'16 who has interned for Smart Girls since 2013.

Saturday morning presented another opportunity for resume review before learning personal finance and all about how to lease an apartment. The opening session was followed by opportunities for practice interviews with the participating alumni and parents. At lunch, students heard from three young graduates about what life has been like "Beyond the Gates" in their jobs or professional school.
Saturday afternoon concluded with the opportunity for students to attend two industry-specific panels followed by the final session, "Succeed in Your First Job" where students learned about hiring trends, what supervisors expect, professionalism, and making a difference in their new communities.
