Ray Knight - Head Athletic Trainer

    Ray Knight is in his fifth year as head athletic trainer at the University of the South.  Prior to becoming the head athletic trainer, he served one year as an assistant athletic trainer under former head athletic trainer Brad Harrison.  As the head athletic trainer, his responsibilities include complete medical coverage for the 22 varsity intercollegiate sports the University of the South offers.  In addition to supervising a full-time assistant athletic trainer and five work study students, Ray works diligently to control and maintain both the athletic training expense budget and also the medical budget.  He is responsible for insurance and record keeping and is also an American Red Cross instructor in CPR, AED and First Aid and Safety. 
    Prior to arriving on the mountain, Ray attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  While working with the men's basketball team, he was also able to enroll in the Graduate Athletic Training Program and successfully completed a Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training.  During his time in Chattanooga, he was fortunate to work with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks during their October training camp. 
    Growing up outside of Nashville, Ray attended Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet High School where he played basketball, baseball, and ran cross-country.  Following high school, he attended college at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee where he received his athletic training degree while working under former head athletic trainer Jerry Robertson.  Following the completion of his athletic training degree, he completed a summer internship with the Atlanta Braves through the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers' Society. 
    Ray holds membership in the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society, Southeast Athletic Trainers' Society, and also in the National Athletic Trainers' Association.  He is a NATABOC qualified examiner and also a Tennessee licensed EMT - IV Therapy. 
    Ray Knight married the former Shannon Kemper of Ooltewah, Tennessee on July 3, 2004.  The couple resides in Cowan. 

Sarah Hulsey - Assistant Athletic Trainer

Sarah Hulsey joins the athletic training staff this year and comes to the Mountain from Virginia Tech, where she has recently earned a masters degree in health and physical education. During her 2 years at VT, she was the head trainer at Blacksburg High School.

Originally from Heber Springs, Arkansas, Hulsey received a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Arkansas State University in 2004. At ASU, She worked primarily with football and women's soccer. Hulsey then completed an internship at Coastal Carolina University, where she worked with softball and with football during there Big South Conference Championship season. She is joined on the Mountain by her cat, Rufus.
