The Politics of Memory in Transitional Justice: Lessons from Rwanda

Longman

Timothy Longman, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the African Studies Center, Boston University, will give a presentation entitled “The Politics of Memory in Transitional Justice: Lessons from Rwanda.”  The presentation will be October 23, 2014 at 4:30 pm in Gailor Auditorium.

Dr. Longman will examine the ways that the post-genocide Rwandan government has utilized memorials, education, political reforms, courts and other mechanisms in hopes of transforming group identities and consolidating political power. Dr. Longman will also elucidate how the Rwandan population has reacted to these processes of crafting a collective memory. Based on a forthcoming book, the presentation will provide broad lessons on nation building and transitional justice for other post-conflict states. The presentation is open to the public.
