MEASURING WOMEN’S DISEMPOWERMENT IN AGRICULTURE IN PAKISTAN
Underinvestment in women often restricts economic growth and poverty reduction in developing countries. Countries with greater women’s empowerment tend to have a lower incidence of poverty and rank higher on the UN human development index.
Huma Khan will discuss her paper on “Measuring Women’s Disempowerment in Agriculture in Pakistan”. She will share her methodology for quantifying and measuring multiple dimensions of empowerment along with women are marginalized or disenfranchised, and present her results from rural Pakistan.

APPLYING BEHAVIORAL ECONOMICS IN THE REAL WORLD
We tell ourselves we’ll definitely exercise before work tomorrow, but when the alarm goes off at 6am, we’re suddenly not so sure. We know that it’s a good idea to save more for retirement, and yet we never seem to get around to increasing our pension contributions. And we let small hassles, like filling in a form, get in the way of reaping large rewards!
The fact is that all of us fall prey to behavioral quirks. This means that if we’re going to design effective policies, programs and products that help people make and follow through on the best decisions for themselves – and for society – we need to understand real humans. We need behavioral science.
Huma Khan will introduce behavioral science and share her experience at ideas42 on how to use insights from the behavioral sciences to design solutions to some of the world’s most persistent social and economic problems.
Huma Khan is a Senior Associate at ideas42 currently focusing on design and decision-making in consumer finance, access to credit and digital finance. She holds a Masters in Public Administration and International Development degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Bachelors degree from Sewanee, University of the South. In the past she has worked as a management consultant in Nigeria where she partnered with large commercial banks to analyze financial literacy and consumer behavior. She has also worked on consulting projects with governments in Ethiopia and Pakistan. Greatly passionate about viewing social development through a gender lens, Huma has published book chapters and discussion papers measuring and quantifying women’s empowerment and parity in intra-household decision-making in rural Pakistan. When not immersed in analyzing behavioral economics and international development, Huma enjoys analyzing poetry and music.
