Dr. Stephanie L. Batkie comes to Sewanee after several years at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in English from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Northwestern University. Her work focuses on late medieval English, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon literature, and she has a particular interest in the theory of sound. She has published on John Gower, William Langland, and the ecology of late medieval complaint poetry. Current projects include a book project, John Gower and the Sound of Politics, and a translation of John Gower's Vox Clamantis, forthcoming from Medieval Institute Publications (in collaboration with Matthew Irvin). In addition to teaching in Medieval Studies, English, and Humanities, Dr. Batkie will be directing the Writing Across the Curriculum Program.
