Joseph Perna holds a Ph.D. from New York University, where he specialized in modern Italian history and culture. His teaching and research explore vernacular modernism in Italy, with particular emphasis on cinema, photography, and magazines in the years surrounding the Second World War. His essays have appeared in The Italianist and World Film Locations: Florence, and he is currently at work on a book about aesthetic experience and collective life in film melodrama. His favorite canto is Inferno 5.
