ACE Medical – Neurosurgery with Dr. L. Madison Michael
by Amanda Watters, C'18
The main goal of my internship was simply to become exposed to the daily life of a neurosurgeon. I shadowed Dr. Michael and his residents in 33 surgeries, which totaled to about 115.5 hours of surgery. I had the chance within these surgeries to ask questions, in addition to which Dr. Michael or one of the other doctors present would add a running commentary of explanation in good detail. I learned the anatomy of the brain, surgical procedure, and surgical outcome and expectations based on diagnosis. I also attended 6 resident conferences, each one of which presented roughly 8 case studies. I was in the clinic for 10 days, during which I met around 160 patients.
