Meet the 2015 V-SURE students

November 4, 2015

The 2015 V-SURE students Hayden Byrd, Veronica Gordillo-Herrejon, and Mark McAlister join the 2014 V-SURE interns Abby Bray and Elizabeth Beilharz this summer at Vanderbilt. The V-SURE Program is funded by grants from the NIH from Vanderbilt and through the generosity and support donors with the Davis-Spickard and the Stoney-Merrill Internships.

The Vanderbilt-Sewanee Undergraduate Research Experience (V-SURE) Program began in 2013. Alumnus Walter Merrill has played a large role in establishing and making the program successful. He is the Vanderbilt Physician Mentor and facilitates the medical shadowing experiences. Students spend 10 weeks doing research in one of the hundreds of biomedical laboratories available on the campus and will typical shadow a physician 1 to 2 days per week at the Vanderbilt University Hospital or at one on the Vanderbilt Medical Clinics.

The 2015 V-SURE students have diverse array of interests and goals while at Vanderbilt. Veronica Gordillo-Herrejon’s goals are to improve people's health. She is really looking forward to learning from others. Her plan is to get a MD and to specialize in dermatology. Mark McAlister’s passion for medicine began upon his arrival to Sewanee, after becoming an EMT and experiencing his first few clinical rotations in the back of the ambulance, he realized that medicine was something that he definitely wanted to pursue. Hayden Byrd comes from a family of doctors, his interest in medicine stems from watching generations his family help others. He plans on applying to the University of Texas Medical School in Austin, TX which, opens in 2016 that will focus on MD-PhD training. He is looking forward to his experience at Vanderbilt and what it will show him about what MD-PhD track entails.”
