Island Ecology kicks off its 31st year

Sewanee's Island Ecology Program kicked off its 31st year on St. Catherines Island last week. Ten students majoring in a variety of subjects will spend six weeks with professors Bran Potter, Ken Smith, Kristen Cecala, and Kirk Zigler (with Tom Howick) and will examine beach erosion, fire ecology, terrestrial invertebrates, and aquatic organisms, among other topics. Thanks to Patty McGrath for this nice photo of a roseate spoonbill and blue heron on the island's Cracker Tom Hammock.
