Team Latin Sensation, composed largely of chemistry and biochemistry majors (along with a few undeclared students interested in these disciplines) competed successfully in Sewanee’s second annual Final Four BBQ Slam, taking 1st place in both the wings category and station decorating and 2nd place in pulled pork with their Latin-inspired barbeque recipes. The BBQ Slam is one of Sewanee’s Cornerstone events, designed to bring faculty, staff, students and community together in a healthy and fun environment. Teams of students partnered with a faculty member and a professional chef to create BBQ recipes that they then prepared on large scale for the entire campus. Preliminary competitions were held March 10th (wings and pulled pork) and March 28th (ribs and brisket) and the final was held on April 5th in conjunction with a campus Final Four-watching party.
The members of Team Latin Sensation included Fernando Acosta, Elizabeth Beilharz, Nate Chapman, Palmer Coleman, Hallie Crosby, Ella Dermon, Nicole Fischer, Sydney Jackson, Nick Klus, Sarah Moats, Daniel Myers, Cid Oculam, Luis Tinoco and Prof. Robert Bachman. They were assisted by Chef Rick Wright of Sewanee Dining.
