With funding from the Mellon Globalization Forum, Sara Nimis (Arabic) and Greg Pond (Art) traveled to Cairo to lay the foundations for the course “Egypt Through a Conscious Lens” to be taught Easter semester 2016, which is projected to include an abroad component in Egypt during spring break. Professors Pond and Nimis visited galleries and museums, attended events and performances, toured some of the city’s ancient sites, and scoped out great places to stay and eat with students. Students traveling to Egypt with the Easter course will collect material and ideas in conversation with a variety of Egyptian academics, students, artists and activists. Upon return to Sewanee, students will creatively respond to the themes raised in class and through their experiences in Egypt by producing a series of audio and visual projects.
